About The University

George Benson Christian University College (GBCUC) is located 7 km southeast of Kalomo town in Southern Province of Zambia. It is one of the oldest private, nonprofit higher education institutions in Zambia. GBCUC is registered with the Higher Education Authority of Zambia and is known for producing high-quality teachers for Zambian secondary schools

GBCUC is a subsidiary of Namwianga Mission, an outreach wing of the Churches of Christ. Zambia Mission Fund, a nonprofit organization based in the USA, provides leadership and support for Namwianga Mission and George Benson Christian University College.

History of The University

Namwianga Mission established George Benson Christian College in 1985 as a Bible training institution with the purpose of equipping individuals for leadership in the Churches of Christ.

Mission leaders recognized the need for self-supporting church planters and leaders and began the process of transitioning the college to a teacher-training institution. In 1989 the George Benson Christian College of Education (GBCCE) opened and began offering diplomas in secondary education. The course of study was developed to include Bible classes and opportunities for ministry and outreach so that graduates are prepared to support themselves and be effective leaders and evangelists in their local communities and churches. The college later became affiliated with the University of Zambia. To date, nearly 3000 graduates serve as teachers and administrators in Zambia and neighboring countries.

A sponsorship program funded by American supporters began in 1996 for students who were financially needy. Graduates of the sponsorship program are deployed to teach in remote regions of Luapula, Muchinga, Central, Northern, Southern, and Western Provinces of Zambia. These sponsored graduates are bonded to Namwianga Mission and receive living and upkeep allowances for two years or until the Ministry of Education assigns them to different regions of the country.

In 2017, the college embarked on a project to become a university. Significant infrastructure and academic enhancement efforts were undertaken in preparation for attaining university status. In 2022 the Zambian Higher Education Authority (HEA) granted official registration and recognition of George Benson Christian University College.

George Benson Christian College of Education (now George Benson Christian University College) actively collaborates with the Ministry of Education on various national projects, including examinations and curriculum development. Additionally, the college has established strong connections with international higher education institutions such as Harding University and Abilene Christian University in the United States of America.
